Relationship between Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal Server 2003
Windows SharePoint Services technology in Windows Server 2003 is an integrated portfolio of collaboration 
and communication services designed to connect people, information, processes, and systems both within
and beyond the organizational firewall. You can also use Windows SharePoint Services as a development platform 
for creating collaboration and information-sharing applications. It is available for download at no additional 
charge to Windows Server 2003 customers.

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is a scalable enterprise portal server built upon Windows
 SharePoint Services that you can use to aggregate SharePoint sites, information, and applications in your organization 
into a single, easy-to-use portal. SharePoint Portal Server 2003 relies on Windows SharePoint Services to provide basic Web 
hosting and document storage functions, but extends it with additional functions for navigation, search, application 
integration, and personalization.

Sharepoint is a microsoft packaged software solution. It's meant as a collaboration tool. It allows you to create
 'teamsites' that contain functionality for a specific team, or project, or group, or whatever. Some functionality 
includes document posting and management, survey apps, message posting/threading, announcement posting, etc.. It has 
security so that you can specify who has access to a specific teamsite or even a specific document library within a 
teamsite.

At my company, everytime a new project is opened, a teamsite is created for that project. All project documentation
 is centrally stored at the teamsite. It's known as a communcation and repository for projects. So, status reports, 
presentations, project charters, project plans, all of this is stored here.

You can use .NET to create new modules for your sharepoint teamsites. For instance, you might want to create a report that would reside within your project teamsite. 

Know that there are a couple of different components of sharepoint. There is sharepoint teamsites, which I described above. There is also a sharepoint portal, which is used to create portal websites.


These databases are:

<...>_PROF
This is the profile database and contains SharePoint profile information for the Portal
One of these for each Portal
<...>_SITE
This is the site database and contains all of the Portal and WSS site information
At least one of these for each Portal or WSS instance.  To help load balance, more can be created through the WSS Administration user interface.
<...>_SERV
This is the Service database and contains the alert definitions anf notifications, gatherer logs
One of these for each Portal
<...>_Config_DB
This is the Configuration database and contains the server definitions for the farm environment
Only one of these for the entire farm
