Sharepoint is a microsoft packaged software solution. It's meant as a collaboration tool. It allows you to create 'teamsites' that contain functionality for a specific team, or project, or group, or whatever. Some functionality includes document posting and management, survey apps, message posting/threading, announcement posting, etc.. It has security so that you can specify who has access to a specific teamsite or even a specific document library within a teamsite. At my company, everytime a new project is opened, a teamsite is created for that project. All project documentation is centrally stored at the teamsite. It's known as a communcation and repository for projects. So, status reports, presentations, project charters, project plans, all of this is stored here. You can use .NET to create new modules for your sharepoint teamsites. For instance, you might want to create a report that would reside within your project teamsite. Know that there are a couple of different components of sharepoint. There is sharepoint teamsites, which I described above. There is also a sharepoint portal, which is used to create portal websites.
